Julie O’Brien and musician Cian MacSweeny met in 2008 at a mutual friends’ party and sparks were instantaneous. “Our mutual friend actually locked us into the kitchen together until we kissed,” Julie reveals. As their relationship grew from strength to strength, Cian decided it was  time to pop the question. “He brought me to Ballintubbert House and Gardens under the pretence that we were going for a tasting of their new menu. He had lived in this house for a year while writing music and we spent so many weekends wandering around there and have fond memories there. Cian proposed in front of a beautiful fountain in the garden’s centre,” Julie explains. Of course, she said yes and September 21, 2018 was selected as the wedding date, with a ceremony in St. Mary’s Church, Dingle followed by a dreamy reception at the Dingle Skellig Hotel.

Memorable moments

The pair both agree that their ceremony from start to finish was particularly special. “Cian sand ‘On Eagle’s Wings’ in the church and a candle was lit on the altar for Cian’s father Denis who passed away a number of years ago,” Julie recalls. The couple also have fond memories of their hotel reception. “The drinks reception in the Skellig was also a highlight. They served the tastiest ham rolls in the world and of course the meal itself was amazing too,” she adds.

Personal touches

Julie warmly remembers her family and loved ones’ involvement in her day as being a significant personal touch. “All of the church and reception music was provided by an array of family and friends. Cian’s aunts and cousins are all incredible musicians who performed, and my uncle and cousin also represented my side of the family in the music. It was one of the most special parts of the day for us and we’ll never forget it,” Julie explains.

How was your experience with The Dingle Skellig Hotel?

“The Dingle Skellig Hotel was absolutely amazing and we couldn’t have been more delighted. All of our guests commented on how great the staff were and they look after everyone from the day we arrived until we left a week later. The hotel itself was incredible, and the meal was amazing too.”
