Deirdre Power, from Ballyroe, Tralee and Damien Driscoll from MahareesCastlegregory, planned their wedding in less than 100 days and it was the best day of their lives.

Deirdre, who works with Kerry County Council, played football with Austin Stacks Ladies and after winning a big game 13 years ago the ladies went out to celebrate. Deirdre deliberated as she was due to fly to the UK that evening to her friend Jo’s home but her gut said change your flight. She did, thankfully. While out dancing in Fabric Nightclub in Tralee she met a Castlegregory man and the rest, as they say, is history.

Damien, who works with DPD Couriers, took Deirdre to Dublin on the pretence that they were going to celebrate his niece, Roisin’s, birthday. “Since it was December a trip to the shopping centre was a must to pick up some lastminute Christmas gifts. I noticed Damien was acting a bit shifty and he blurts out “would you like an engagement ring for Christmas.” Of course I said yes and gave him stick for not getting down on one knee,” recalls Deirdre.

In January Damian and Deirdre decided they wanted to be married within a few months. But was it possible? They approached Ballygarry House Hotel in Tralee and all their worries were taken care away. They booked Good Friday, April 19thAnd they were off, the planning began immediately and 100 days later an unforgettable wedding day was had. They had 60 immediate family and close friends for the meal and another 120 came to the evening celebrations.

With the wedding only being 100 days away and the dress usually taking six to nine months to order Deirdre was extremely impressed with the level of professionalism and stock that were available to her at Finesse Bridal in Listowel. Deirdre went for a “simple but cute” swing dress and dressed it up with a bolero, lace straps and a belt.

By the time Deirdre and Damien chose their wedding celebrant, Liz Drew of Spiritual Ceremonies, they were too late for the required three months registration by the State but Liz sorted them out. “With just a call out to the registry office in Killarney and a meeting with the county registrar in Tralee we were good to go. Liz had the running order sorted for us and we just had to slot in our readings and music even with last-minute adjustments there was no panic and she was so accommodating.

Despite everything being very personal at the wedding, even the bride made her own cake, the flowers created beautifully by Maura’s Cottage Flowers, were very special to Deirdre. Maura was a long-time family friend and her unique style and selection of flowers really made the bride feel like she was going to have the wedding of her dreams. And she did.

Deirdre’s dad, Jackie, had been battling cancer for 16 months leading up to the wedding so having him there and at his best on the day was more than Deirdre, Damien and their family could have ever asked for. Unfortunately, Deirdre’s dad passed away a few weeks after the big day but she is so grateful that he was there with them and he loved every single minute of it and was so proud of his beautiful baby girl.

He was so excited for the wedding and had a ball on the day and danced the night away. Little did we know that this would have been his final social occasion as he passed away a short six weeks later.  I am so grateful for the care he received from my mom, doctors and nurses to get him to have this celebration with us.  We have the most precious pictures and video to cherish for life. He was the heart of our family and he is missed terribly.

How was your experience at Ballygarry House Hotel?

“The whole team at Ballygarry could not have been more helpful. Everything was answered with a yes and nothing was a problem, from suggesting bands to helping out with speeches. Thys was at every meeting and with less than 100 days to do it all he was checking in all the time to make sure we were on the ball. We needed the encouragement to get it all sorted in time. The Ballygarry are experts at what they do and predict things you don’t even know is going to happen. The meal was lovely and their attention to detail was incredible. Thys was on hand for the whole day and night and we a truly grateful for the attention he gave our family and friends.” BallygarryHouse.com
